  NGO Goals



Swaraj’s central agenda is to work against injustice and discrimination against women, to make women aware of both their rights as well as their responsibilities, and to acquire self-respect and dignity. Swaraj operates in the slums of Kolkata.



Swaraj currently operates in Kolkata under the leadership of Mr. Akramul Haque, a social worker and graduate of the Indian Social Institute (Bangalore). Since 1979 he has been involved with Calcutta Urban Service, managing its educational efforts in various villages and bastis. Swaraj presently supports two non-formal education centres, and two preparatory schools, taught by a total of four teachers, who are required to have a Class 10 education. Forty-five girls between ages 9-14 attend the former, while 65 children (ages 5-8) attend the latter. Some 70% of the students in the four centres are female. Two CLUBBs, begun in 2000, are currently in operation, at Park Circus and at Howrah Ghosh Para in Kolkata, with 12 and 10 girls in each, respectively, between the ages of 9-15. Swaraj runs three libraries, supported by the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, for neo-literates and poor students. It also runs the innovative concept of the weekend “Street Corner Library,” where underprivileged children can have access to books. Swaraj organizes meetings, campaigns, seminars and more...
