Nutanhat Development Society (NDS) established in 1992 is a grassroots level non-profit organization committed towards development of the poor and distressed communities in West Bengal’s Purulia district. Purulia is the bordering district with the state of Jharkhand. NDS’s focus has been to strengthen the capacity of the poor communities so that they become aware of their rights. Through this process of intervention, marginalized communities build capacity, form pressure groups, and eventually get elected in the Panchayati Raj institutions to influence policy makers at the district and state levels. NDS also has a network called ‘Alliance’, formed of eleven community service organizations from different blocks in Purulia. Currently, NDS is trying to get support from more...
