NISHTHA volunteers have facilitated building up of Balak-Balika Bahinis, age group 6-11, numbering 980, Kishore and Kishore Bahinis (adolescent girls and boys) of the age group 11 to 18; numbering 3890, Mohila Mondals with women of the age group 19-45 numbering 3928, and Elder Women’s groups with women above the age of 45 numbering 190.



NISHTHA at present is working in 72 villages in 4 blocks of South 24 Paraganas district for the empowerment of women and children who suffer from acute poverty, deprivation, malnutrition, diseases, illiteracy, exploitation, superstition and many other evils. NISHTHA works in the areas affecting the common people i.e. health, nutrition, education, group formation, value orientation, livelihood programs, awareness generation and campaigns. In all its activities the ultimate aim is to empower the distressed women and children.

Based on its experiences with community mobilization, NISHTHA is working with male leaders and all decision makers within the families and villages to begin the long-term process of changing attitudes. NISHTHA’s model, which is based on community empowerment, more...
