MERDS is an NGO based in Tamil Nadu whose primary focus is on Self-Help Groups based on microcredit for women & Self-Help Groups for children to promote education in Dindigul District.



  Achievements

 

Women Groups - The tailoring class has been
really successful and more than 100 of the 150 or so students have some sort of a job. Some have set up shop at home. Others get jobs from local industry especially more before festival time when there are a lot of demand for tailors. MERDS had applied for a tailoring machine grant from the govt. and got 17 machines.

  Summary

 

MERDS is an active non-profit organization working for the development of rural poor women, children and unemployed youth in and around Dindigul district, Tamil Nadu. It aims at creating a sustainable mechanism at micro level to build a society based on enquiry and social justice. Mr.Chandrasekharan, the secretary of MERDS has developed a good rapport with the local society thereby identifying the basic problems/needs of the villages in the vicinity of MERDS. They have been able to successfully implement a tailoring training program as part of a project funded by AID-Duke. A lot of women coming out of the program have already been employed.
