  Summary

Sangtin Kisan Mazdoor Sangathan (SKMS) is a peoplesí movement based in Sitapur dt., Uttar Pradesh. It emerged from Sangtin, a group set up by rural women to enable them to be bigger stakeholders in the processes of development at all levels. Sangtin seeks funding for capacity building and ongoing mobilization in its villages; operational expenses; and publication costs for its newsletter.

  Achievements

- By representing the rural poor and the issues that affect them, SKMS has built its strength to over 3000 members in more than 80 villages in just 3 years. Through SKMS poor women and men, predominantly Dalit, have come together to campaign for access to irrigation waters, employment under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), minimum wages and a fair and lawful implementation of the development policies made by the state. - SKMS campaigned for the revival of a 17 km canal that had been dry for more than 10 years. Village meetings, eventually led by villagers themselves, helped develop understanding and solidarity. Thus mobilized, SKMS put pressure on the Irrigation Department to ensure repair and cleanup of the canal. It took 2 years for water to reach the tail end of the canal and SKMS kept up a sustained campaign throughout. - The people of Sangtin secured unemployment wages for members through a prolonged campaign. This resulted in payment of Rs 15 Lakhs in wages to workers and the district administration becoming accountable to the people. - SKMS has also been successful in securing employment for almost 5000 saathis through constant mobilization

  Goals

In 2011-2012, Sangtin aims to expand its reach and fight for causes like irrigation water, rural employment, land rights and others as they come up.
