2012 is year 8 of Shibus saathiship. Shibu continues to stay a strong advocate of zero waste and the battle to keep landfills and incinerators away from rural communities. He currently is trying to organize a national movement/campaign against zero waste.

 
 

  Achievements

 

 

?Zero Waste Himalaya Network-Launched ZWH –50 people attended from 7 countries-All of them showed interest in ZW-Bhutan govt wants Thanal to do workshop –Shibu currently in Bhutan-Govt of Sikkim wants Sikkim to be the first ZW state in India ?Policy recommendations on Resource Recovery Facility-Kerala govt. assigned Thanal to study resource recovery facilities-Aim is to reclaim non-bio-degradable waste-Need to utilize the informal network of waste-pickers & recyclers-Govt will likely implement this in Kerala from next year Resource Exchange Hub –Thanal website-www.thanal.co.inacts as a resource hub-Provides free publications and literature to support waste management and awareness programs-CD/Videos/hard copies of publications are also sent to various interested people ?Zero Waste Kanyakumari-Convinced Mr. Rajendra Ratnoo, IAS –Dist collector of Kanyakumari to take up ZW –which was a breakthrough-Ran teacher-training workshops and also helped develop curriculum on ZW for educational institutions-Still providing technical support for his ZWK campaign-Sent him to S.Koreafor ZW training through the GAIA network ?Miscellaneous-Got selected as a member of the Technical Advisory group of the Kerala govt.-Produced a case-study on non-pesticidal management practices in AP. Was invited to Geneva to present this study-Attended ZW International Alliance Annual conference in Phillipines and presented a paper ‘Zero Waste governance –experiences from Kerala’-Also trained the community and govt officials of Alamino city, Phillipines-Attended Social Enterprise Alliance conference in SF and presented a paper on ZW and Social Enterprise

 

  Goals

 

 

ZW as an approach to reduce urban poverty-Currently working on a proposal to do research on urban poverty in Trivandrum and Nagercoil and create interventions to reduce poverty-3 yr project; recruited 2 people in Thanal to carry out this program ?Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) campaign-The feasibility study done on non-bio-degradable waste across Kerala produced some background info. -This needs to be enriched to build into a campaign-Planning to pitch for tubelights and sanitary napkins Strengthening and extending ZW network-Regional workshops need to be conducted to strengthen the ZWH network-Demand from HYD to initiate ZW there. A partner organization has agreed to facilitate it. Planning to conduct training in Feb-March-Planned workshop with fine arts students on ZW to produce posters and other exhibition materials-Recently met groups working with ragpickers. Want to build a network to organize them as group to obtain recognition & to improve their working conditions. Prelim work has been done in some parts of Kerala. A group from Pune has also offered technical support.-Planning to organize one-day training program in ZW for college students in Kerala and other states.
