Society for the Development of Economically Weaker Section (SODEWS) was formally registered in the year 2004 although they were engaged in developmental activity since the year 2000.
SODEWS focuses primarily on enhancing the quality of educational interventions at pre-school, primary and middle school levels.
We work in 5 panchayat blocks in Vellore District in Tamil Nadu, India. Vellore district has a fairly large concentration of tribal population, many of whom are first generation learners.

Anganwadi Program: Over 150 Anganwadis run as a part of the Integrated Child Development Scheme are covered in this program. One volunteer handles 10 schools in a week, two per day. Our focus is to get more children to come to Anganwadis and to generate interest in learning & academics in preparation for their formal schooling. Primary School Program: In nearly 150 Government Primary schools our volunteers meet with 5 grades teaching them to read & write fluently in their vernacular, english and also helping them understand fundamentals of mathematics. Our key interest here is to ensure that there is a smooth transition to middle schools and to ensure that we stem the drop-out problem.

Reduce the gap between the urban and rural quality of living Make villages self-sufficient to arrest migration to urban areas Empower Women Child Development Keep on greening the areas where our activities are spread Gradually remove superstitions, respecting the traditions of the rural people
