  Summary

Somnaths accounts of Tuberculosis somehow reached CG govt via Biraj Patnaik and created a stir. Following that, some govt officials visited Baiga homes and assured JSS (this time more firmly) of food support to TB patients. TB figures are a nightmare. With cases of resistant TB on the rise, JSS docs are at wits end and fear the future
Unfortunately, in my (Vasus) 10 years of visits to JSS, I havent seen any significant difference (improvement) in health status, disease complexities or clothing of patients coming to JSS. In fact Dr Jain says its worsened over time due to increasing poverty and hunger. The number of patients has also increased-maybe due to failed systems elsewhere and word of mouth.

  Achievements

Lot of work is being put to improve the condition of people suffering from TB. Lot of work needs to be done still. JSS has made recommendations to the state of Chattisgarh for better Public Distribution System to provide better nourishment.

  Goals

More than 60% of people in the district experience scarcity of food, undernutrition prevalent amongst the population. Almot half of men and two thirds of women with pulmonary TB at JSS suffer from sever undernutrition. 10% of these face death because of undernutrition. The objective is to provide protein supplements to all TB patients so they can combat the disease.
