  Summary

Swanirvars approach to healthcare is based on looking at health as not a problem of treating disease but as a set of conditions necessary for maintaining ones well-being and prevent disease in the first place.

The stress is on a community approach, where full-time health workers and part-time "motivators", all of whom are local villagers, work with the rest of the village in generating awareness about how to maintain good health, and address health problems when they arise. Emphasis is on preventive aspects without involvement of doctors. They also link up with the Primary Health Care Centers working to make them function more efficiently.

  Achievements

Today, Swanirvar has grown into an excellent organisation with a good grassroots base by creating a community-based leadership in multiple areas of education, health, micro-credit,etc. For about 20 villages, there are 5 fulltime health workers assisted by about 10 part-time motivators who are under on-the-job-training for becoming village health workers. Some areas of work include: -improving the sanitation of the village -introducing smokeless chullahs in the kitchen - providing low cost toilets and spreading general awareness regarding health issues. - Mother and child health care-immunization of pregnant women, provision of proper nutrition pre-natal and post natal care. -Promoting herbal medicine as an alternative to costly allopathic medicine -Promotion of health related issues through the organisation of blood donation camps. - Generating awareness and capacity building to health workerst hrough the Kishore Kishori Bahini. - Creating an awareness of health related issues among women through the Self Help Groups. - Detection and treatment of Arsenic poisoning
