A snap of Apna Dhaba.

Apna Dhaba, a "larri" ( road side food stall) serving organic meals, is a small initiative with variegated objectives as mentioned in the Goals section below.

The people running the dhaba are activists of Paryavaran Suraksha Samiti (PSS), who raised their concerns against the unsafe working conditions against the corrupt management of the chemical factory employing them. They were then retrenched, inspite of court orders asking the management to re-hire them. Besides being workers, all of them have been very active in workers, womens and human rights issues. The organic groceries are procured from, among other places, farmers and adivasi growing organic food, cooperatives, an organization run on Gandhian principles. The people involved in Apna Dhaba are active in spreading awareness regarding right to a chemical-free alternative, human rights, and organic food movement.

Apna Dhaba makes a statement of possibility and hope to have a livelihood which is not destructive to human being and the environment.

- Rehabilitation of retrenched workers and activist by providing them chemical free alternative livelihood who have already been exposed to a lifetime of toxic chemical exposure; - Contributing in the building of an organic movement in the country, where organic food is no longer a fad or privilege of the elite but is accessible to the common person in the city; procuring raw material for the eatery locally from farmers and communities growing crops and vegetables organically. - To set up a model of alternative livelihood for factory workers across the country who have lost their jobs due to factory closures on account of environmental violations or worker’s rights issues. - The organic dhaba is envisioned to be run mainly by the workers themselves. It would symbolise their struggle, their fight for right to clean livelihood, and provide a platform for uniting workers and people fighting for health, environment and justice; - The aim is to transform this noble idea into a successful initiative, resources generated from which would go to small struggle groups across the country fighting for their right to livelihood, resources and to lead a healthy life. - Finally, as a commitment to support the members of minority community who are increasingly facing social boycott in the state of Gujarat after the state supported massacre of minority community in 2002, the initiative will provide part or full time employment to members of minority community.
