  Summary

 

 

Initiative is a group of young activists that is part of the Bombay Sarvodaya Friendship Centre. The project supports two full-time coordinators of the group as well as production of a book on peoples movements and basic administrative expenses such as rent and office assistant. This will directly help Initiative engage in research and documentation of peoples movements and issues, and indirectly help in building awareness among students and media and in organizing campaigns.

 
 

  Achievements

 

 

These are achievements of the Initiative group as a whole, not limited to the aspects that AID funds. * Studied development initiatives in the Narmada valley and produced report “Commitment Beyond the Struggle: Development Initiatives by NBA in the Narmada Valley” * Organized 3 exposure programs in past 1 year, which took about 40 college students from Mumbai to visit local cotton-mill workers'' groups, Adivasi Kisan Sanghatan in Madhya Pradesh, Plachimada Anti-Coke struggle in Kerala, Narmada Bachao Andolan, Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sanghatan in Rajasthan, Vimukti in Karnataka, etc. * Published a book on the proposed Interlinking Rivers project: "Riverlinking: Millennium Folly?" * Helped in the resurgence of the bi-monthly "People''s Movement" magazine which covers struggles and issues relevant to social justice movements in India.

 

  Goals

 

 

* To conduct research and build documents and bring out publications on relevant issues which can be used by people’s movements for their campaign. * To facilitate a link between the college youth /students and the people’s movements for building an organic links between the two as well as building a secular and democratic society. * To build a link between the media and the people’s movements for strengthening people’s voices and raising their issues. * To provide direct action and support to the people’s movements during their campaign on various issues concerning marginalised communities.
