--School children getting acquianted with computers

This proposal is the second phase of the project titled "Educational needs of children". The initial funding provided for the building of a computer room for the SPS School in Gavimata, Tumkur district, Karnataka in in 2003-2004. RHF Inc. was able to get 2 used laptops and 1 desktop for the facility. However the systems being used and old had maintenance problems. In addition, the place has extensive power outages.

This second funding request is to provide for equipping the facility with 5 additional computers , a printer, internet connection, a UPS system & associated work. The installation of the above mentioned has been completed. In addition, Infosys also donated 3 used computer systems. So in total there are 9 desktops & 2 laptops to serve about 450 rural students including the used computers that were provided by RHF.

Recently, there has been a major setback. On August 18th of 2005, 9 out of 11 computers were stolen from the school. The burglary is currently under investigation.

The computer lab became fully functional in March 2005. The classes were divided into 2 groups. While one group has theory classes, the other has practicals. NIIT syllabus is being followed. The students showed keen interest in learning about computers.

The project aims to make computer education a reality for the students of this rural area and to eventually enable them to consider vocations involving computer applications.
