Shikshamitra is an education project that AID San Diego recently approved in Kolkata. Project proposal was forwarded to AID Chapters from the AID Education Cell.

A secondary school has been started in a slum area of Kolkata to enroll dropouts from mainstream/govt schools and motivate them to study further using alternative education methods. Vocational training will also be provided to older children (14+) with career counseling, placement services.

The project also involves an Education Resource Centre to serve as a comprehensive resource for teachers, researchers and educators. It will include a library with access to education-related journals and publications, and eventually also serve a center for teacher training and education related research.

Shikshamitra school started in April, with 22 children enrolled.

For the first year: Goals are to start the LC/school: consult with parents to motivate parents & children to enroll, develop curriculum, attract staff, start classes, etc Goals for ERC will be scaled back from original proposal according to available funds.
