Praja Vidyalayam is a school up to 7th standard for the poor in Kakinada, A.P and was started in 1999. Children of domestic workers and rickshaw pullers attend the school and the strength is about 150. Today it also has a library with about 3000 books, mostly in Telugu, some in English, and "Sabala" which is a center for teenagers to learn and practice skills and crafts like sewing, embroidery and dress designing. There is also a bookbinding center where workers form local printing presses teach book repair, binding, making notebooks, etc.
Their projects have so far have involved children, youth and women from their area and they have been able to congregate and stimulate local community towards various activities. They have also been conducting book meets, musical reveries, entertaining folks in old age homes, which
are free and open for all.
Based on this background and experience, they are considering extending
their services to other areas.
1) Planning to publish 3 books on popular sciences for children and lay people and distribute them in the government and municipal / Zila Parishad schools in Kakinada district.
2) Volunteers to introduce students to these books, conduct quizzes, Q&A, chats, etc to help all students get the most out of the books.
Volunteers are available from two of the teachers unions - Socialist
Teachers Federation and United Teachers Federation, who are ready and
willing to take part.
Through Peoples Education Society contacts with Jana Vignyana Vedika,
publishers / distributors, and the teachers unions, Praja Vidyalayam
has the capacity to undertake and implement this project.
