  Summary

The struggle against the proposed Athirappilly Hydro Electric Project across Chalakudy River, the fifth largest river in Kerala is gaining momentum with the Kerala State and the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) deciding to start the preliminary work within months, inspite of the widespread public opposition to the project. The Athirappilly HEP is the seventh large dam that is to be built across this 144 km small Western Ghats River.
This project is to support the struggle for human and environment angles that will get hugely impacted if this project goes through.

This is phase 2 of the project wherein one of the main goals is to campaign amongst the community and identify second level of leadership so that the struggle will become self sustaining by community members itself.

  Achievements

1. Increased awareness over the detrimental impact of the dam on the river and livelihood 2. Increased participation - as seen in the public hearing-on issues related to dam struggle. 3. More unity with respect to the dam struggle 4. Consolidation of women and children as an important section in the local community.

  Goals

* Support the struggle for human and environment angles that will get hugely impacted if this project goes through. * Support the human justice which will prevent the displacement of hundreds of kadar (endemic tribal) families. * Work against the dam and prevent the unparalled environmental disaster. * Campaign in the community and bring a second level of leadership * Campaign related activities against the dam
