Swati Desai and her husband Michael Mazgaonkar, are social and environmental activists who have been living and working in Juna Mozda, a tribal village in the Bharuch district of Gujarat, since 1991.

In Mozda, the Mozda Collective has been involved in soil and water conservation, organizing a women''''''''s cooperative for tuvar dal processing, savings programs and dairy, primary health care, sanitation projects and in training local youth for community projects. In 2002 they won the Rural Development award (instituted by the Development Support Center in Ahmedabad) for their work in watershed management

The concept of a Saathi is a natural extension of the AID Fellowship idea. From time to time we come across persons who are contributing to the empowerment and development of communities in India and have a vision similar to ours''. However, they lack the means to carry out their work. These are the people we nominate and elect to be our Saathis.
