Utthan has been trying to support biodiversity initiatives with the broad objective to increase livelihood securities of women. c. Initiatives to end Gender based violence and institutional mechanisms like Nyay Samitis (Justice Committees) - The village level awareness campaign was taken up in all work areas in December and focused on building an environment for VAW. Advocacy - With the much awaited notification of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 in September 2006, Utthan has actively taken up efforts to gear up as an organisation and collectively at the State level, to make this Act a reality. d. Right to Water and Sanitation - Utthan has been working on the issues of access to safe, adequate and sustainable water and sanitation, revival of traditional sources etc which is a basic human right. All this work is being done through village level INRM committees like Water Committees, Watershed Committees and Disaster preparedness committees etc., wherein the effort is being made continuously to have an equal and active participation by women since women play a major role, in water collection and management. e - Work with women Sarpanchs and Panchayat members has been done through the Federation. A number of initiatives have been taken up in building awareness on the importance Gram sabhas, role of Sarpanchs, linkages with Talati etc.. Training for women who are interested in the issue and are part of the Panchayati Raj Samitis was held. The trainign focuses on the role and responsibility of Sarpachs, Panchayat members and the requirements for preparing for the coming Gram Panchayat elections. Cultural medium has been used as an important way to carry out this work and build awareness. Strong linkages have been made with Mahila Swaraj Abhiyan (a network of Gujarat based organsitations working on women’s space in local governance) for all these interventions. Through the Network and prior to the local village panchayat elections in Gujarat, civil society groups joined together to carry out election awareness campaigns in 1800 villages of 95 talukas in Gujarat through media like meetings, film screenings, poster exhibitions, material dissemination, signature campaigns, FGDs. 34 villages were covered by Utthan in all its areas through this campaign. f. Women’s Land and property rights - Work on this issue has continued through the women’s federations and linkages with the Working Group for Women and Land Ownership (WGWLO) a Gujarat based network. As of now, the process of capacity building of federation members to strengthen understanding of legal revenue matters and a feminist perspective of land and property rights is on.
