Himmat was formed and named so by women survivors of Naroda-Patiya carnage, who were relocated to Vatwa – an area on the outskirts of Ahmedabad city in 2003. It began as a training programme to empower the women with sewing, stitching skills. Some members of the original group who were trained at Himmat, went on to find successful employment or home based work.
Today it is a dynamic group of 18 women – 15 of whom run (and earn through) the production unit. Three young(er) women from the group have been trained in art and theatre to tell their stories and engage civic society in questions which concern the women of Himmat and all those others who were re-habilitated / dislocated following the carnage of 2002.

Himmat women have exhibited their products in local and out of state venues(lately, the world social forum, for one). Their designs have been successfully sold in the marketplace. They''''''''ve also obtained some major commercial orders.

• The women need to gain further exposure, training and skill building on how to run the system entirely on their own. • The fabrication unit needs to be established within the market – beyond the clients that it already caters to at present. • Himmat needs to engage with the community on other socio-political issues on the basis of its strength as a successful women’s initiative in the area
