  Summary

Government of Andhra Pradesh is attempting to construct a mega dam on river Godavari near Polavaram village (close proximity to Rajahmundry) and there have been many issues with this project. The dam project did not take into consideration many important issues including practicality of relocation of more than one lakh tribal people, submergence of 250 + villages and 1.57 lakh acres of land, longterm environmental impact, etc. Samata is a NGO questioning the government about the way the project is being implemented through legal cases and community based campaigns,

  Achievements

Samata has been active with Polavaram project for many years, especially the last four years since the government reissued contracts and initiated acquiring lands.

  Goals

To file legal cases against the government of AP and to make sure the dam is constructed as per law after acquiring clearance from appropriate agencies including environmental and forestry departments. To educate the villagers and make their voice heard. To make sure the rehabilitation and relocation is practical. To organize local campaigns against the hasty decisions of the state government.
