  Summary

 

 

2009 is year 5 of Shibus saathiship. Shibu continues to stay a strong advocate of zero waste and the battle to keep landfills and incinerators away from rural communities. He currently is trying to organize a national movement/campaign against zero waste.

 
 

  Achievements

Some of the highlights are: Publications / Media Produced 3 minute video on Stop Landfill and uploaded to Youtube.com http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=CIxqgQMjK34 Produced a set of 6 posters on Zero Waste Kovlam to be presented by Minister for Local Self Government at Ministers Meeting in New Delhi Projects Zero Waste Railways A study was conducted and a report was submitted to Indian Railways for better Waste Management options in Railway Stations Visited Aranmula Grama Panchayat to develop waste managment plan as requested by District Collector Submitted approach paper for developing waste management. Didnt progress much since lack of interest from Local Panchayath Networking Started reviving network of NGOs and Individuals working on waste related issue with an objective to resist upcoming threats from Waste to Energy projects in India. Training Programmes 5 Day Training Programme on Municipal Solid Waste Management and Extended Producer Responsibility. A training programme was organised in association with Institute of Management in Government for Secretaries of Municipalities in Kerala. 5 Day Training Programme on Zero Waste Rural Tourism. A training programme was organised with the support of UNDP and Government of India for NGO members engaged in implementation of Rural Tourism Projects in India. Programmes / Meetings GAIA (Global Alliance for Incineration Alternatives www.no-burn.org ) India Meeting on Waste to Energy. A national level 2 day meeting was organised in Thiruvananthapuram with the support of GAIA. About 50 people from 11 States participated in the discussion to form national strategy to address upcoming waste to energy issues. (2008 August 10,11) Technical Support Helping the Local Self Governments across Kerala directly and indirectly through capacity building, guiding and developing plans for solid waste management. Helping Rural Tourism Sites outside Kerala to develop plans for waste management Campaigns Zero Waste Ongoing campaign to promote Zero Waste philosophy. Through persistent and continuous interventions, it is becoming official policy for Government of Kerala. Public Participation and Resource Recovery the key elements of zerowaste made mandatory for Panchayaths to set up their waste management plans. Still in evolving stage and need continuous support and orientation to get it translated into ground Plastics Ongoing campaign to reduce the use of plastics, especially disposable plastics. Continuous criticisms and interventions resulted in extending the scope of Plastic ban in the State. State Government also officially following no disposable plastic events and material use. So instructions are given to the Government departments not to use disposable plastic cups, plates, plastic flags, decorations, PVC Flex boards etc in their office or programmes. Need follow up and opinion building for a better policy

 

  Goals

 

 

Goals are not that much different from last year. Continue working in the field and building partnerships with Govt departments and NGOs, creating national awareness about zero waste. POA for 2008 1.Campaign:- Take the campaign against Waste To Energy out of Kerala and to other states.Take Zreo Waste forward and explore new ideas to broaden the concept 2.Building Capacities:- Organising training and skill share workshop on Zero Waste to build capacities in volunteers selected from grassroot organisations across India to create a network of zero waste campaigners. 3. Networking:- Exploring interested individuals and organisations across the Country to form a network to discuss waste and related issues and to promote Zero Waste. 4.Publications:- Preparation of campaign materials/posters/ video spots and dossiers for the campaign. 5.
