  Summary

The present proposal requests funds to support the work of 5 community-based campaigners from gas and water affected communities in Bhopal and one Bhopal-based campaign coordinator with the necessary experience and expertise to help coordinate and support survivors efforts, in order to (1) raise community awareness about the present health, social, economic and legal situation facing the affected community; (2) conduct community needs assessments and health surveys that will improve understanding of current conditions; (3) take steps to improve this situation through community mobilization, and (4) conduct outreach activities with other communities to help prevent future disasters elsewhere in India.

  Achievements

Water Supply: About 70% of the water affected communities with a population of 40,000 now has clean drinking water through Kolar pipeline. After a lot of campaigning and fighting we have been able to get the government to provide free tap connection to all 7500 households and so far 4788 connections have been given. We have also started a signature campaign in which we are trying to get signatures of 1,00,000 gas victims. This signature campaign is addressed to the Prime Minister and Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh urging both of them to present correct data. We have already written letters to the Prime Minister of India and to the Chairman of Indian Olympic Association urging them to write to IOC regarding revoking Dow''s sponsorship. We have also circulated a petition for the Indian Olympians to sign and oppose Dow''s sponsorship in the Olympics. We are getting pretty positive response from the Indian Olympians and a similar effort will be replicated in UK and if possible in different parts of the world.
