AID and You

Happy New year to all of you. A devastating end to 2004 that saw many thousands affected by the killer Tsunami, has been followed by widespread support and encouragement from communities all over the world. The Association for India’s Development, Inc (AID, Inc) extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who has helped lend a helping hand to the unfortunate victims of this natural disaster. “From Relief to Rehabilitation” said one AID volunteer, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to not only provide relief but also ensure long term rehabilitation of the affected people.

Balaji Sampath, a full-time volunteer with AID-Chennai and the coordinator of the relief efforts, says, “After visiting the areas I now realize the gravity of the situation -- we will have to work for at least 2 years to get things back to normal.”

AID has raised about $2.1 million (more than 7.5 crore Rupees) from more than 9000 generous donors over the last week. $160,000 has been sent to AID Chennai in Tamil Nadu for providing immediate relief for the affected people. These funds are being used to buy blankets, medicines, food and other basic necessities, as part of the immediate relief campaign. The relief efforts are going strong in Nagipattinam, Cuddalore, Kanyakumari, Pondicherry and other affected areas in Tamil Nadu. AID is also reviewing possible partnerships with groups in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.

Apart from the immediate relief work, AID volunteers have also been assessing the extent of damage in the Tsunami affected areas and identifying the long term needs. Volunteers both in India as well as US have been trying to identify projects to fund that provide a lasting solutions for long term rehabilitation, which include building shelters as well as livelihood generation. Over the next week, we anticipate additional funds to be requested by our partners at the grassroots for more immediate relief needs. The remainder of the funds will be used in the ensuing months to provide long-term sustainable rehabilitation to the affected communities. We are currently reviewing proposals for long term rehabilitation from more than 14 different grassroot groups. We will keep you updated on our medium and long term rehabilitation and relief efforts.
